Chomps Review: Worth the Hype?

You've probably seen Chomps at the checkout counter. We dug into what's in it, where it comes from, and whether it's worth the price.

Our Take

Chomps has earned its spot. It's been around since 2012, it's now sold in nearly every grocery chain in the country, and thousands of ratings hold up at that scale. The Original flavor's ingredient list is short and clean: beef, water, sea salt, encapsulated lactic acid, celery juice, black pepper, red pepper, garlic powder, coriander. No sugar, no soy, no dairy, no hormones, no antibiotics.

Chomps isn't American beef. It's raised and finished on grass in Cape Grim, Tasmania, a specific region with volcanic soil and year-round pasture, but it means the beef flies in from the other side of the world before it lands on a US shelf. The company leans into that story rather than hiding it, Cape Grim shows up on the packaging itself.

It uses encapsulated lactic acid to lower the meat's pH quickly, rather than a slow, old-world fermentation process. That keeps the price and shelf life predictable, but it's a different process than true fermentation. For most people shopping on ingredient quality and taste, that distinction won't matter much day to day.

The Basics

Each 1.15oz stick runs about 90 calories and 9g of protein, 0g sugar across the Original line. Certified Humane. In a beef collagen casing.

Founded in 2012 on the idea that a convenience snack shouldn't require a junk-food label. That's held up as the company scaled into one of the most widely stocked grass-fed sticks in the country.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Chomps beef sticks grass-fed?

Yes, grass-fed and grass-finished, so no grain at any point. The beef comes from Cape Grim, Tasmania, which surprises people, since Chomps sits on shelves in just about every American grocery store. Stocked here doesn't mean raised here.

Is Chomps as healthy as it's marketed?

Pretty much. The ingredient list is short: beef, water, sea salt, encapsulated lactic acid, celery juice, black pepper, red pepper, garlic powder, coriander. No sugar, no soy, no dairy, no artificial preservatives, no hormones, no antibiotics. We didn't find a catch.

Why does Chomps cost more than a typical beef stick?

Imported, grass-finished beef just costs more to source than a domestic or mixed-diet product. You're paying for the sourcing claim being true, not for the label design.

What does Chomps stand for as a brand?

Founded in 2012 on the idea that a convenience snack shouldn't mean a junk-food ingredient list. Certified Humane sourcing, Whole30 approval, and a refusal to add sugar or fillers even as the company scaled into thousands of stores. The values held up at volume, which is the harder test.
