Bonafide Provisions Review: We Prefer It for Cooking

Frozen, not shelf-stable, and reviewed very differently depending on who's tasting. Our take on why that gap exists, and who this one is right for.

Our Take

This is the widest gap we have found between everyday buyers and professional tasters on any broth we have reviewed. Amazon customers rate it highly, calling it very tasty and praising how little is in it beyond broth and a few organic vegetables. At least one professional tasting panel went the opposite direction entirely, describing the flavor as medicinal and antiseptic.

Our read: this is a genuinely plain, unseasoned broth by design, closer to what you would make at home than to a flavored, ready-to-sip product. Home cooks who are using it as a base for their own soups and sauces tend to like exactly that. Tasters evaluating it the way you would judge a broth meant to be drunk straight tend not to. If you are buying this to cook with, the plainness is a feature, not a flaw. If you want something flavorful enough to sip on its own out of the container, look at Brodo or Kettle & Fire instead.

The frozen format is a real, worthwhile tradeoff, not just a packaging quirk. Skipping UHT pasteurization to stay shelf-stable means better gelatin retention from the original simmer, at the cost of needing freezer space and a shorter window once thawed. Worth knowing, one longtime buyer reported a sour taste that had not been there in earlier purchases, a single data point rather than a confirmed pattern, but worth flagging if you are a returning customer and something seems off.

The Basics

Made from organic, grass-fed beef bones (marrow, knuckles, joints, femurs, ribs) per the brand's own listing, triple-filtered water, organic onion, apple cider vinegar, garlic, and parsley, no added salt. A Frontier blend also exists mixing grass-fed beef, lamb, and bison bones with pasture-raised turkey. Slow-simmered 18+ hours, sold frozen in 16.9 to 24 oz formats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bonafide Provisions bone broth good?

Depends who you ask, and the gap is unusually wide. Everyday Amazon buyers rate it highly and describe it as very tasty, appreciating how minimal the ingredient list is. At least one professional tasting panel described the flavor as medicinal and antiseptic. Our read: this is a very plain, unseasoned broth by design, which home cooks who are adding it to their own dishes tend to like and tasters expecting a broth that is flavorful on its own tend not to.

Why is Bonafide Provisions frozen instead of shelf-stable?

It skips UHT pasteurization, the high-heat process that gives most cartons a long shelf life, which also tends to break down gelatin. The tradeoff is better gelatin retention from the original 18+ hour simmer, at the cost of needing freezer space and a shorter window to use it once thawed.

Has the taste changed recently?

At least one longtime buyer reported a sour taste that was not there before, in an otherwise mostly positive review set. That is a single data point, not a confirmed pattern the way the Roli Roti history is for Butcher's, but if you are a returning buyer and something tastes off, you are not the only one who has noticed.
