Carol and Maggie have been friends since their children were small and business partners for 25 years, and have run Tawanda Farms for about two decades. They chose Murray Gray cattle and Romney sheep as two gentle breeds that finish well on grass alone, and they raise the animals on irrigated pasture and native forage with no growth hormones or maintenance antibiotics. Their own explanation of finishing: they butcher only in the fall, when the animals are coming off pasture and before they start on stored hay, because that is when the finish is best, straight from fresh green grass.
Beef and lamb are sold from a published price list with orders placed through the ranch. The ranch also sells Romney fleece and registered breeding stock.
