James Ranch
Durango, Colorado, Animas Valley, 100% grass-fed and finished Red Angus, on-ranch market and grill
About This Supplier
James Ranch is a multi-generation family ranch in the Animas Valley just north of Durango. Its beef is "100% grass fed and finished, no grain or feedlots," from Red Angus cattle raised on irrigated valley pasture with quick rotational grazing. Beef is sold at the on-ranch market and grill and through regional markets and restaurants.
Full Profile
Kay and David James raised five children on the ranch, and the next generation returned to build seven working enterprises, from the cattle and a raw-milk grass-fed creamery to pastured eggs, gardens, and a blue spruce tree farm. The beef program uses quick rotational grazing on low-lignin grasses and clovers in the Animas Valley, moving cattle every one to three days. The ranch's wording is "100% grass fed and finished, no grain or feedlots," with no hormones or antibiotics, from a Red Angus base processed at 18 to 30 months.
Because the ranch only processes when cattle are on fresh green grass, whole, half, and split-half orders are available July through November; individual cuts are sold year-round at the James Ranch Market, open Wednesday through Sunday, and at listed markets and restaurants. The market is at 33846 US-550; call 970-385-6858.
