The Platt family moved from Melbourne, Florida to Madison County around 2004 for land better suited to year-round forage, and founded Deep Roots Meat in 2009. During their research they finished test steers on grass and forage alone, supplemented only with hay and baleage, and confirmed the cattle still gained fat with a roughly one-to-one omega-3 to omega-6 ratio. When the family applied for an "All Grass (Forage) Fed Beef" label, the USDA pushed them toward a standard grass-fed label that allows soy hull pellets and cottonseed; the family insisted on the stricter label and received it.
Cattle get no antibiotics, hormones, or mRNA vaccines. Beef, pork, chicken, lamb, and eggs are sold through the farm's Barn2Door store, at farmers markets, and at drop-off locations, and beef ships in USDA packages.
