Frequently asked questions
Are there grass-fed beef restaurants in Portland?
Yes, though the current, live list runs shorter than Portland's farm-to-table reputation might suggest. Dick's Primal Kitchen (Woodstock) is the standout: a whole-menu, 100% grass-fed and grass-finished burger counter, confirmed directly on their own current menu. Urban Farmer Portland (Downtown, The Nines Hotel) runs a Carman Ranch grass-fed New York steak alongside grain-finished Painted Hills cuts, and states the distinction itself. Higgins (Downtown) confirms two grass-fed dishes on its lunch menu. Burgerville, the Pacific Northwest regional chain, names Carman Ranch on its permanent Grass-Fed Sweet Onion Burger. Several other Portland restaurants with older press coverage of grass-fed claims (Ox, Besaw's, Hal's Cafe, Bantam Tavern, Little Big Burger) no longer carry that language on their current menus as of this check, so we left them off rather than publish a stale claim. See each listing for exactly what's confirmed and by whom.
Is Painted Hills beef grass-fed?
Painted Hills Natural Beef markets itself as grass-fed, but its own site describes a grain-based finishing diet, "corn, alfalfa, wheat and various food by-products" in the last months before processing. That makes it grass-fed but grain-finished, the same pattern as Bear Creek Farm and Porter Road Butcher in our Nashville guide. It's a legitimate, disclosed program, just not fully grass-finished. Urban Farmer Portland's own menu draws this exact line, listing Painted Hills cuts as "grain-finished" right next to its grass-fed Carman Ranch steak, which is why we can state it with confidence here.
