Fatworks Tallow Review: Is It Worth the Premium?

Fatworks sells two grass-fed tallow products that look almost identical on the shelf. We dug into what separates the Premium line from the Organic one.

Our Take

Fatworks built its name on artisan-rendered fats back when grass-fed tallow was a niche ask, not a trend. Both the Premium and Organic lines are rendered from 100% grass-fed beef sourced from US family ranches, and both are Whole30 approved. The jar, the texture, and the cooking performance are effectively the same product.

The real difference is the USDA Organic seal on the Organic line, which certifies the feed and land the cattle were raised on, not a different rendering method. If that certification matters to you and you're comfortable paying more for the third-party verification, get the Organic. If you're buying on the grass-fed claim alone, the Premium line gets you the same tallow for less.

The Basics

Single ingredient: grass-fed beef tallow. No additives, no deodorizing, no bleaching. Solid at room temperature, melts around 100°F. Sold in a 14oz jar, shelf-stable once opened if kept away from direct light and heat.

Both lines handle the same way in the kitchen, high smoke point, neutral-to-beefy flavor, and a 1:1 substitute for butter or lard in most recipes. See our full tallow guide for cooking and storage detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Fatworks' Premium and Organic tallow?

Both are grass-fed. The Organic version carries USDA Organic certification, which verifies the feed and land management the cattle were raised on met organic standards, on top of the grass-fed claim. The Premium line is grass-fed without that additional certification layer. Same rendering process, different paperwork behind the sourcing.

Is Fatworks tallow cold-rendered?

Fatworks positions its rendering as a slower, lower-heat process than mass-market tallow, intended to preserve more of the fat's natural flavor and nutrient profile rather than rendering it down as fast as possible. That's the main thing that separates an artisan tallow brand from a commodity one.

Is Fatworks tallow good for cooking and skincare both?

Yes, it's sold as a food product and works for both uses since it's unscented and minimally processed. If you want a tallow sourced and labeled specifically for topical use, check our tallow for skin guide, but Fatworks' food-grade tallow is a reasonable choice for either.
